What's likely to kill you?

Here's a (useful?) table of the odds that something will kill you.

Comments:
And this is why I'm afraid of spontaneous human combustion.

Other and unspecified smoke fire and flames, X08-X09
Deaths 300 One-year Odds 978,856 Lifetime Odds 12,566

Two Things:

Ride the street car.

Guns are safer than knives.

Wow – there are some interesting comparisons. The section on Falling – I never thought it could be so fatal.

Is it really safer to fall from scaffolding or a ladder than to slip or stumble – am I reading this right?

So, there is a 1 and 23 chance that I will die from an external cause in my lifetime? Especially from something probably weird like just slipping on a level surface.

Those chances seem larger then I would have thought before I read this.

I'm a little bummed that they don't have the stats on my chances of dying from radiation..... or of being bitten or CRUSHED by reptiles...... this is what keeps me awake at night!

this is fascnating. i feel like it answers so many questions. i bookmarked it for future reference. one that creeps me out: beeing stuck between two pieces of machinery or something. aah. reading this reminded me of the beginnings of six feet under episodes.

well great, now i get to add so many other things on my list of things to avoid. :)
